This should be titled "Tale of Two Subs and the Japanese Code" since about half of the book dealt with how the knowledge of the code assisted in the Pacific theater. If you just want to read about submarines and don't care about the mystery and cloak & dagger aspects, you would be disappointed/5(46).
Tale of Two Subs by Jonathan J. McCullough. It is hard to put this book down. The two subs, Sculpin and Sailfish (originally christen Squalus), twin sisters that were built during the 's, were sent to the Pacific before Pearl Harbor/5. The lives of these two subs were forever intertwined. It was an unfortunate accident that the Sailfish torpedoed the enemy ship that was carrying survivors from the Sculpin.
I recommend this book highly. The author does a good job of describing the background of these two submarines as well as the code breaking efforts of the men at station HYPO/5(46).
